The Hand of Mrs. Wilhelm Röntgen

This was the first photograph of an x ray in 1895 taken by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. The visual semiotics of this close-up picture shows the bone structure of the hand. My understanding of the visual codes in this picture is that the hand could represent feelings of death and pain which makes me distressed. As an experiment in 1895 this is a good photograph for its time. The low lighting has been used to enhance the dark shadows in the image which creates a sense of enigma. The photo is blurred because of the year it was taken, however, the certain colours and tones used have created a Mysterious mood.
